Boasting a raft of stunning products of late, Smok has released their current flagship model, an updated version of the X Cube BT 50 called the X Cube II.
Catering for just about every type of vaper on the planet thanks to a very full feature set, especially those of us who enjoy the Sub Ohm style of vaping, this latest model is going to turn some heads with its looks and match its looks with outstanding performance and functionality in a choice of two colour options, all stainless plus a recently released black version too.
Set the device to Wattage mode and the X Cube II will offer the user a range of 6W all the way up to 160W, firing down as low as 0.1Ω. And in Temperature Control mode from 200 F° up to a maximum of 600 F (100°c-315°c) firing down to 0.6Ω and up to a maximum of 3Ω.
The X Cube II boasts Bluetooth 4.0 technology, with a customizable LED to change the look that best suits your personal taste & style by adjusting the individual RGB values. You can also set the colours to rotate at different speeds as well, so what more could you ask for?
Well, here are a few things before you consider asking! The X Cube II sports a larger OLED display from the previous model that is completely sealed to prevent damage from accidental spillage of your E-Liquid.
There are adjustments for the amount of time the OLED stays illuminated, and its orientation can be changed by 180 degrees.
The design also includes a removable magnetic battery cover for easy access to the battery compartment that holds two 18650 batteries and a choice of up to 16 preset and fully customizable wattage and temperature modes for you to choose from.
As I have already mentioned previously in the TFV4 review, the latest TFV4 tank has been released to coincide with the launch of the X Cube II, creating what I and many vapers around the world will see as the next evolution in combined vaping technology.
The X Cube II is aimed squarely at the experienced Sub Ohm vaper as is the accompanying TFV4 tank, so if you are new to the world of electronic cigarettes, I would suggest this review and the two products I have just mentioned are not in any way suited to the beginner. However, you are more than welcome to read on if you wish and consider this device and the TFV4 for a later date in your vaping calendar.
Due to the sheer amount of information that I would have to cover in this review I have included only what I consider to be the most salient and useful points to help you decide whether or not this is the right device for you. I have therefore included a link for a more in-depth description of all the functionality the X Cube has to offer in a little more detail.
The X CUBE II has been sent directly to me for review from SMOK TECH to evaluate both its performance and features.
The device arrived in a shrink-wrapped box that includes a picture of The X CUBE II on the top with a silver sticker denoting the products colour. On the bottom of the outer sleeve is a brief overview of the products functionality and a bar-code. Placed on the side of the outer sleeve are two other bar codes, one for the Apple Store and the other for Google Play.
To check the products authenticity, you will find a label on the main box that also displays a bar-code, plus a reference code and serial number. Removing the outer sleeve you find a black box with the silver SMOK logo printed on the top. Just lift off the cover to access the contents inside.

Operation & Performance
I have used a selection of E-Liquids from Cult Classic. UK retailers can purchase these exquisite E-liquids and other current Premium US lines from Virtual Vapours Here
If you intend to use this range of E-Liquids, please make sure they meet the current requirements set out by your countries regulatory bodies.
For EU countries, more information on this can be found here along with REACH’s partner agencies from around the globe.
E-Liquids may contain diacetyl (DA) and acetyl propionyl (AP) or other carcinogenic ingredients or disease-causing substances, so please be aware of this and seek medical advice before using any of the products used in my reviews.
People can suffer from allergies to chemicals that may be present in the makeup of certain types of E-liquids or produced in their vapour. People can become sensitive to, or even allergic to Nickel or Titanium used in Temperature Controlled designed coils. Again, please be aware of this and seek medical advice before using any of the products used in my reviews. Also, check with your E-liquid supplier or the equipment manufacturers directly before purchase and use.
You might find this range of calculators provided by Steam Engine particularly useful, so thank you to Lars for allowing me to include them in my reviews. These calculators are currently under development, and the information that they contain may change at any time without notice. Please read the How It Works section for a more in-depth understanding. And never leave your device charging unattended, make sure you are using the recommended battery for your device, and always remember, SAFETY FIRST.
Potential Polycarbonate problems
It is well known that certain e-liquid ingredients can cause cracking or even melting of polycarbonate plastic or acrylic tanks and tubes. For further information on this subject, please check with your E-juice supplier or contact the manufacturer directly.
I have tested the Smok X Cube II’s full vaping range from 6 watts all the way up to its maximum of 160 watt’s (Limited) using the new Kebo Russian 91% Big and the SMOK TFV4 tanks in both Stainless & Black finish with the new and very extensive ranges of current and future coils. The X Cube II has been thoroughly tested in Temperature mode as well, for both performance and any potential dry burning issues.
I have been using the SMOK X Cube II continually over the past four weeks to test the functionality of this device as thoroughly as possible and to gauge its overall performance. The model sent is a pre-production version (Sample, Not for Sale), so please take this into account when evaluating my comments in the conclusion.
There is a lot of ground to cover so I will start with an overview of the body’s construction and outer control functions, followed by its menu structure and finally the overall performance.
The X Cube II is built from a combination of Stainless Steel, Zinc Alloy and Plastic, with an additional black finish option. The top plate houses a firm spring loaded 510 connector pin with a neatly designed surrounding air channel for flush mounting of the atomizer.
A new and enlarged OLED screen has been included for easy viewing of the menu functions on the display. Situated just below the screen are the + & – input buttons that allow you to modify the output values in wattage mode and temp mode, as well as switching between the six current menu modes and their sub-menu structures.
SMOK have also designed a new and very comfortable firing bar along the entire front side instead of the customary fire button, with an illuminated RGB LED strip seated just behind it, offering you a choice of up to 16 million different colour configurations as well as visually notifying you when the firing bar has been activated.
On the reverse right-hand side of the device is a removable magnetic battery cover with the SMOK logo printed on the top of the cover allowing for fast and easy access to this compartment that holds two 18650 batteries inside (Not Supplied). Please, only use the recommended batteries with this device.
The base has a mini USB connector port for firmware upgrades (Not for Charging) along with three lines of venting holes for the battery compartment in case the batteries should vent.
Be under no illusions, the X Cube II’s size is large but still very comfortable to hold and well balanced when the TFV4 tank is attached or any other similar sized RBA/RDA.
To turn on the device insert two fully charged 18650 batteries and push the firing bar five times in quick succession.
You will see the SMOK logo appear in the OLED display on the top of the device with TL 360 and the firmware version you are running, followed by the welcome message.
A message on the OLED screen New Coil Up Same Down will appear after attaching your atomizer of choice. Please remember this when changing over atomizers.
When using a new atomizer press up (+ Button) and for the same coil down (- minus button).
The X Cube II will automatically check the attached coils resistance to monitor any fluctuations.
The large OLED screen provides you with a full and very comprehensive display of the current settings and values for each one of six adjustable menus. To change the current values of these settings just press the fire bar three times in quick succession to gain access to these six available menus that are currently available to you, and then use the + or – buttons on the top of the device to scroll in either direction to locate the desired menu that you are looking to modify.
Another nice feature that has been included with this model is the option to change the ramp up time between normal, hard and soft with a deviation of + & – 10% in both the wattage and temperature modes that has already been preset by the user. This will take place within the first two seconds of activating the firing bar. In normal, the device will fire at the set Wattage or Temperature. This function will help to improve your overall vaping experience when using this device.
You will also find a list of shortcuts inside the user manual that will help you access some of the devices features more quickly. For example after pressing the firing bar three times in quick succession you can use the firing bar to scroll through the six different menu options along with three sub-menus instead of using the plus or minus buttons to do so.
There are other customization options in the downloadable software application from Smok.
09/09/2015 Firmware upgrade
With an extensive range of 6 watts’s all the way up to 160 watts and firing down to 0.1Ω’s the dedicated sub-ohm vaper is more than catered for with this model, in my opinion. There is also an option to set the ramp up time during the first two seconds of activating the firing bar with a 10% plus (Hard) or 10% minus (Soft) from the preset (Standard) setting as well which is yet another very nice addition and most welcome at the very high temperatures. You also have the option of 16 preset menus as well.
Temperature Control mode has a range of 200°F (100°C) and 600°F (315°C)
There is a coefficient settings menu below the Temp Normal Soft and hard options with a preset value of 0.00600 (0.00586 absolute) for Nickel wire, and a further sub-menu to set for SC (single coil) or DC dual (coils) options.
Smok have allowed adjustment of the coefficient values with their downloadable software application. The default setting for Nickel is as I have mentioned 0.00600 Temperature per degree C, so please make sure you include the correct offset values for any other supported types of wire to avoid dry burning your cotton.
I believe the X Cube II will also be supporting Titanium coils as well when it is released. The correct value for Titanium I think is 0.0038 per degree C and this should be included in the firmware update in time for its official release date.
In the bluetooth menu, you can turn this function On or Off by using the +/- buttons situated on the top of the device. Connect your computer or mobile device using the USB connector located on the base of the device. Be sure to download the Smok application that is compatible with Android 4.3 and iOS 7, I believe.
Gives you the choice to switch between Wattage Mode Temp Mode & Memory Mode.
There is also an option to modify the ramp up start time for all three in each of the sub-menus during the first two seconds of activating the firing bar. There is a deviation of plus 10% (Hard) or minus 10% (Soft) from the preset (Normal) settings value.
Normal mode will fire the device at the set wattage or temperature value that you have pre-determined. Example Output value is set to 10w. In Normal mode, the device will fire at 10w. In the Soft mode, the device will fire from 9w and up to the preset 10w within a two-second time frame after activating the firing bar. In Hard mode, the device will fire at 11w and down to the preset 10w within the two seconds from activating the fire bar.
Adjustment of the LED can be set from this menu.
Using the +/- buttons gives you access to a selection of other options that include: A. R.G.B adjustment B.Jump C. Shade and D. LED off.
More information on these adjustments can be found using the link I have provided above.
Includes a puff counter where you can set the limit of puffs that you think you will require to best suit your vaping habit!
It is preset to 0 (Never) and by using the +/- buttons you have the option to adjust it to a value of your choice.
Is the settings menu and Includes adjustments for A. Screen time B. Contrast settings. C. Screen orientation. D. Date & time settings and E. Adjust for the initial Ohms setting with a pre-set factory default of 0.000Ω.
This option allows you to turn the device off from here. The display will show the SMOK logo along with a goodbye message. To turn the device back on again press the fire bar five times in quick succession.
The Smok X Cube II also has a built in locking feature that can be turned on or off by pressing the fire button x5 in quick succession to prevent you from accidentally firing the device.
Apologies for such a long review but I think you are beginning to understand the reason why!
I think the X Cube II is best described as a technological vaping marvel that includes an abundance of new features over its predecessor and is well placed to become the most sought after device for 2015, especially at the price I’ve seen them advertised at.
It’s a solidly constructed piece albeit a little on the large side, offering the vaping enthusiast a wealth of options and possible configurations.
Positioning the OLED screen on top for me is the best place to house it allowing for quick and easy viewing of your settings in all conditions thanks to the inclusion of the contrast adjustment. And with the + & – buttons situated just below, where easy changes can be applied without having to rotate the device in your hand to do so, Smok have most definitely got the user interface just right.
Flush mounting of the tanks I have tested it with appear to be fine with no problems found in making a reliable connection. There was sufficient airflow around them, and I have just used a Kanger Aero Tank Mega with a 2.1Ω coil set to 9W to check this for you.
Battery replacement is a simple and straightforward procedure; however, I would like to see two magnetic strips placed inside instead of the current small circular magnets to provide a more secure locking mechanism for this compartment.
The firing bar is a very cool feature that has grown on me over the past month of use. You only require a relatively light squeeze to activate it and to date, I have not experienced any problems with it getting stuck in the fire position so far. However, that being said, I would strongly recommend you get used to activating the locking feature on this model to avoid the possibility of firing it accidentally.
In both Wattage Mode and Temp mode, the X Cube II has performed flawlessly in each case. Please, always double check that you have the correct mode of operation to match the type of coil you have attached to this device before firing it. And also verify that you have set the correct coefficient values when using the device in Temp mode to avoid any dry burning issues.
I hope that a future firmware upgrade will allow for making these adjustments on the device itself without the need to modify the coefficient values via the current software only option.
You also have the option to use the M16 memory function to pre-set your desired output values making life just that little bit easier when switching between setups.
Smok has now included the ability to round robin the menu functions that I had asked them to include in the M80 Plus review, which is a very nice feature to have on board, but sadly this does not apply to either the wattage mode or Temp mode. I think the round robin function should be included in both, making operational adjustments just that little bit quicker in both.
Overall performance is astounding, and there is very little that I can find to fault this device that can’t be improved with a simple firmware upgrade. Screen times could be shorted from 5 seconds to four, but this is a far better option than the previous two seconds (way too short), so I’m not complaining! (Software adjustable option maybe?)
With a choice of two colour options available to you in either Silver or Black, you’re going to find that this is simply a must-have addition to add into your collection when you take into account what you’re getting for the price.
And finally, they have even thought to include a carry case to protect the XCube II from any unnecessary damage.
That just about wraps up this review, and I very much hope to see on a personal note a dedicated Temperature controlled device from Smok’s amazing design team around Christmas time. I feel sure there will be an immense queue for it and possibly a Mini version of the X Cube II?
R.R.P £60.00 $100.00 T.C is not activated $102.00 T.C Activated although I have seen it advertised far cheaper than this. ($70.00)
Coming up next for review is the X Cube II’s sibling named the Koopor Mini, which has an equally impressive performance, but in a smaller package!
