Since the introduction of their first Guardian Pipe SMOK has continued to build on its initial success releasing two further models which includes this fine example, in both a classical and compact design.
The Guardian 40W Kit meets the requirements set out by the TPD according to SMOK, with the inclusion of a U-shaped leak proof E-Liquid tube that includes a child safety locking system backed up by their ground-breaking technology, renowned build quality, and of course style. This latest edition looks set to become yet another firm favourite with the traditional pipe smoker.
Fashioned from maple wood with a centred OLED screen placed in the centre of the tobacco bowl for easy viewing, and operating in both variable wattage and temperature control modes, the Guardian 40W pipe has a lot of useful features packed into its compact size so don’t be fooled into thinking otherwise!
Let’s see what’s in the box and what you can expect for your money!

I have used a selection of E-Liquids from Five Fold Vapor and Dark Market, with varying VG/PG ratios to fully test the Spirals Tank. For retail customers based in the UK, these E-Liquids can now be purchased Here.
E-Liquids may contain Diacetyl (DA) and Acetyl Propionyl (AP) or other carcinogenic ingredients or disease-causing substances, so please be aware of this and seek medical advice before using any of the products used in my reviews.
People can suffer from allergies to chemicals that may be present in the makeup of certain types of E-liquids or produced in their vapour. People can become sensitive to, or even allergic to Nickel or Titanium used in Temperature Controlled designed coils.
Once Again, please be aware of this and seek medical advice before using any of the products used in my reviews. Also, check with your E-liquid supplier or the equipment manufacturers directly before purchase and use.
You might find this range of calculators provided by Steam Engine particularly useful, so thank you to Lars for allowing me to include them in my reviews. These calculators are currently under development, and the information that they contain may change at any time without notice. Please read the How It Works section for a more in-depth understanding.
Guardian Pipe Operation
To turn the device on press the Power button five times in quick succession. You will be met with the SMOK logo, Guardian 4 image, current time and finally the main menu screen. With the power switched on a further five presses of the Power/ Fire button will lock the device from accidental use. To Unlock it press it five times again.
Make sure you have primed and filled your Helmet Nano tank first before operating. When you use a new coil for the first time you will see a message asking you if this is a new coil? Select Yes to continue by pressing the Power/Fire button.
Here you will find the current preset settings for the device including the battery life, Wattage or Temperature, along with the Ohms and Amps depending on which option you have chosen to display from the selection in menu 5.
The Guardian 40W pipe has a choice of six main menu options with sub-menus as well. Here is a breakdown of the functions that each one provides the user.
To access these six menus’, press the Power/Fire button three times in quick succession and then once more to circle through each of six options available to you.
Once you have found the parameter you wish to adjust simply hold the Power/Fire button in for a second to enter a new value.
+ Plus sign. You can increase the value of either the current wattage or the current Temperature.
– Minus sign. You can decrease the value of either the current wattage or the current Temperature.
Includes both Wattage and Temperature Modes.
This will allow you to Switch between either mode depending on your choice of selected coil. Once one has been chosen the appropriate sub-menu/menus will appear.
You can set the puff counter to monitor and limit the number of inhales taken in a day. This can be turned on or off, and also reset to 0 from or, increased up to a maximum up to 999 puffs if required.
Here you have the ability to change what is displayed on the top line of the OLED screen when the fire button is pressed. The options are Main Watts, Main Amps, Main Volts, and Main time.
Power On Or Off
With a range from 1 watt up to 40 watts and firing down to 0.1Ω’s and up to a maximum of 3Ω’s the dedicated pipe smoker is more than catered for with this latest model.
Temperature Control mode operates between 200°F (100°C) and 600°F (315°C) You have a choice of three sub menus when Temperature Mode has been selected.
Strength, is a preheat function which can be used in both Variable Wattage or Temperature control modes to modify the ramp up time of your attached coil.
Supported Coils includes 0.6Ω dual core -Ni-Ti and SS options are currently available to the user.
SMOK have included a reset button countersunk into the wood just above the Power/Fire button to help solve any software issues.
Helmet Nano Tank
The Tank has an E-liquid capacity of up to 1.7ml and includes a child safety mechanism in a leak proof design and comes pre-installed with a 0.6Ω dual core coil head.
Remove the coil and prime the Japanese organic cotton inside before filling the tank up with juice making sure you have enough space left to replace the coil without any overspill taking place. You will notice a Max sign etched in gold on the underside of the tank to help you.
A more detailed description of the menu functionality is found in the included user manual.
Another elegantly designed piece from SMOK with a clear emphasis on meeting the guidelines set out by the TPD regulations for all EU Countries. Improved response times thanks to advanced chip technology, fewer menus compared with earlier versions, and a leak free tank adds to its uniqueness making it even more desirable than past models with an overall appearance that resonates quality.
The mouthpiece (bit-stem) is made of plastic and provides a very comfortable feel to it which is an important factor to consider when designing something that people choose to relax and unwind with which differs from some other forms of tobacco consumption.
The OLED screen seated in the bowl is clear and bright with an uncluttered UI providing the user with only the data that is relevant to the current mode of operation at the time.
Navigation of the six menus and sub menus is both quick and easy to perform thanks to an improved chipset and a well placed responsive fire button that has a clear audible sound to it when activated.
The texture and choice of colour is comfortable to hold and pleasing to look at thanks to a matt finish being applied to it.
It would be even more pleasing to the traditional pipe smoker if a bowl using briar instead of rosewood were fashioned into a future design being far hardier, and possessing heat-resistant characteristics used extensively by the upper classes and hardened pipe smokers alike.
The 510 connector is housed in a shortened shank reducing the overall length of the stummel so, an increase in the tank size could be incorporated without necessarily changing the overall appearance.
With its leak-proof design and child safety features, European vapers will also be allowed to experience the pleasures of such a well-made and stylish electronic pipe too.
An increase in the choice of coils would also be of great benefit given the battery is only 1000mAh and I have asked SMOK on previous occasions if they would consider including a 2.0Ω option. So, I’m asking them once again!
Charging the device is achieved via the micro USB port found on the underside of the bowl along with sufficient venting ports.
So, to sum up the Guardian 40W Kit for you. It’s Great value for money in a leak proof design with only two negatives that I have found. One, the tank capacity of 1.7ml which is clearly no fault of SMOK! And two, the battery size 1000mAh. It would be nice to see this at least doubled in any future releases.
One further consideration I had during this review was a Limited Edition version fashioned from briar wood as I previously mentioned which I’m sure would sell well and traditionalists would happily pay the additional premium for such a model with a choice of tank sizes and stems.
RRP £55-$60 so be sure to check out your local B&M store to try out this latest tank from SMOK.
