SMOK’s R&D team are by no means alien to designing something out of the ordinary and just that little bit special. However, on this occasion, they appear on face value to have struck gold by producing one of their most chic and unique vaporizers to date.

Boasting a plethora of features without compromising on build quality or character in its appearance, the new Alien 220W as the name suggests is a real powerhouse that is squarely aimed at the experienced vaper who requires only the very best from what’s currently available today, and this is an offering you would not wish to miss out on.

They have also included in this kit the latest TFV8 Baby Beast tank with a selection of coils to suit the requirements of the most demanding sub ohm vapers. And if you prefer to bypass this carefully matched combination, SMOK have thoughtfully bought each one onto the market as separate items.

The SMOK Alien kit comes in its usual smart packaging displaying the actual colour of the six available options on the front cover of the box. Also on the exterior, you will find a sticker with the barcode, Serial No, Colour, Ohm’s (0.4Ω pre-installed), and a scratch to remove strip that shows the products authenticity.

On the sides of the box are the QR codes for the App Store and Google Play plus, the SMOK App.

On the base of the box, you will find a full description of its contents and a brief description of the device plus the tank and disclaimers.

Tools Of The Trade & Safety Information

People can suffer from allergies to chemicals that may be present in the makeup of certain types of E-liquids or produced in their vapour. People can become sensitive to, or even allergic to Nickel or Titanium used in Temperature Controlled designed coils. Seek professional medical advice before using any of the products used in my reviews.

You may also find this range of calculators provided by Steam Engine particularly useful, so thank you to Lars for allowing me to include them in my reviews.

The Juice

For the purpose of conducting this review, I have used a selection of E-Liquids from Fresh & Squeezed range plus, the baby beast tank, and the Muramasa RDTA from MarsTeam Japan. Review coming soon.

TFV8 Baby Tank

The TFV8 Baby Beast is a smaller version TFV8 with equally impressive qualities. It has the same design as the TFV8, including the SMOK patented top-filling system with a hinged swivel cap, plus two large adjustable airflow slots on the base.

It comes with a standard 510 Delrin heat resistant drip tip reducing heat at higher wattages, and two Baby Beast coil heads as well.  One with a vertical (0.4Ω) coil and another with smaller quadruple (0.5Ω) coil for a more restrictive draw but equally impressive vapour production.

Alien MOD Operation

The Alien mod has been thoroughly tested in Temperature mode as well as Variable Wattage mode, for its performance, features, and any potential dry burning issues.

The model sent to me directly from SMOK is not the final production model, so please take this into account when evaluating my comments in the conclusion section at the end of this review.

Press the power button five times in quick succession to turn the device on. You will see the current firmware version that is installed (V1.1.8) in this instance followed by the ALIEN logo.

A message on the OLED will appear asking you if this is a new coil that has been attached. Select Yes if it is, or No if you have not changed it from the last time you used it.

Use the +/- buttons to select either YES or No and press the fire bar to confirm

The screen will automatically enter wattage mode with a pre-set value of 6W, being the lowest value that the device will fire down to.

This in itself is a positive step as other devices are initially set to the maximum output value when they are activated for the first time with the potential of frying the coil should you activate the fire bar accidentally.

The OLED screen will display all of the current parameters that the device is currently set to, and the current wattage can be adjusted by using either of the two input keys (Plus+ & Minus-) situated just below the screen itself.

Three presses of the fire bar in quick succession gives you immediate access to the main menu and the four available menus and sub-menus:

Select which one you wish to access and wait four seconds, the sub menu for each one will appear. This is the same process to gain access to any of the available menu choices and make your desired adjustments. To action any changes, simply press the Fire Bar.

POWER: Allows you to turn the device Off or On

MODE Has a sub-menu set of additional functions: Wattage-Temperature and Memory mode (22).

PUFFS: Will allow you to set/reset the puff counter.

SETTING: Gives you access to the Screen Time-Screen Lock-Contrast-Adjust Ohm and Download functions.

You also have a locking function which only requires five presses of the fire bar to activate it or deactivate it when the device is switched on.

For a more detailed description of the menu functions and vaping options available with the Alien Mod please consult the included user manual. The menu structure itself is very straightforward and easy to navigate around.

This is without a doubt the finest device I have reviewed from SMOK. They have strived at every opportunity not to rest on their laurels, but instead pushed the boundaries even further still in the pursuit of excellence and I’m sure will continue to do so in the future.

The TFV8 Baby Beast is another fine example of a well-constructed and machined tank with its familiar top fill design.

The Delrin drip tip sits comfortably in the mouth being neither too wide or too small restricting vapour production while reducing the build-up of heat at the higher temperatures.

Both coils are extremely well constructed combined with large air flow inlets on the base of the coils, and the tank itself. Plus, the inclusion of wide juice inlets to the coils themselves equates to huge vapour production for its size and really good flavour too.

The one which has already been installed is the 0.4Ω coil rated between 40W-80W. Best performance will be obtained with this between 55W-65W. And the spare 0.15Ω coil is rated between 50W-100W with a suggested best performance range set between 60W-80W by the SMOK engineers.

SMOK have informed me that they have released an RBA section which can be purchased separately for the Baby Beast, but it would have been a real bonus to have had this included in the kit as well in my opinion.

The Alien mod is a really stylish looking design and you can quickly see why it is gaining plenty of attention from the vaping community.

The stainless steel 510 connector is one of the best I’ve seen from any Company irrespective of price with a spring loaded pin. Very nice machining here also.

One small detail that I would consider on future designs is to move it into the centre position after reviewing some weeks back both the iPV 400 and iPV 6X which would allow for seating tanks of up to 28mm in width instead of the current maximum of 25mm.

At the top of the main body, you will see the three ventilation slots on each side which should be more than sufficient for heat dispersion and cooling the electronics inside the device.

And, a huge thumbs up for the design of the Aliens OLED screen. It’s bigger, bright, and beautiful allowing you to see everything finally in Technicolor for those of you who are old enough to understand what I mean by this! Great job guy’s hats off to you.

A slightly revamped fire bar helps to create a sleek, stealthy, and well-balanced design to the Aliens outward appearance and is what I would term a squeeze and fire bar. It’s very comfortable to activate and you can achieve this with the fire bar facing towards you or away from you with only minimal pressure being applied to activate it.

There is, however, a very slight amount of play which SMOK are aware of and this will be addressed prior to the final release but no rattle!

Functionality, as we have come to expect from SMOK is pretty much all you could wish for from an advanced users perspective with more than sufficient power, adjustability, and choices of popular wire including 316SS for temperature controlled vaping. Another nice touch here is the ability to round robin between degrees °C and degrees °F in Temp Mode.

Finally, the battery door and compartment have seen improvements which include a plus + & – minus sticker placed at the base of the compartment itself as well as the inside of the lid with the letter A situated over the + (positive) symbol and the letter B over the – (negative) symbol depicting the current charge status of each battery on the OLED screen.

Balanced charging of both batteries is also possible with the Alien mod too so direct charging of the batteries inside the device should not pose any problems.

The door is well designed and locks firmly into place with no detectable rattle or movement of any kind. Rock Solid.

For firmware updates please use this link I had noticed the occasional misfire which had been reported to SMOK and has now been fixed in this latest release (V1.2.2) along with further refinements to the temperature control for greater accuracy.

Very well specked for the price £69.99-$78.99 So be sure to check out your local B&M store to try out this latest design from SMOK.
