Based on their tried and tested past designs comes an updated and uprated version of the popular M80 series in the form of the R200-TC.

Boasting greater performance to cater for the demands of today’s cloud enthusiasts, and in a choice of four colours schemes, SMOK is keeping up with the pace and the power requirements to keep you ahead of the game.

The R200- as its name suggests is a 200 Watt Temperature Controlled device that’s compact, lightweight and very well constructed, helping to produce not only immense clouds but great flavour production as well.

Firing down to 0.1Ω’s and up to 3.0Ω’s in VW mode and 0.06 to 2.0Ω’s in TC mode this latest addition will appeal greatly to the Sub Ohm vaper. SMOK have also included a choice of two coils in the box for you. The TFV4 Clapton coils in 1.8Ω Single and 0.3Ω dual configurations, plus an additional Pyrex glass tube as well.

Combined with reliable technology, style and performance it’s hardly surprising why SMOK have gained so much respect within the vaping industry with an extensive and ever increasing market share.

Let’s take a look at what’s in the box plus a full rundown of its specs and features.


The R200 TC Kit has been sent directly to me for review from SMOK TECH in order to test the functionality of the device and evaluate its performance prior to production.

The device arrived in a shrink-wrapped box that includes a picture of R200-TC  on the top with a silver sticker denoting the products colour. On the bottom of the outer sleeve, you will find a description of the devices capabilities and a bar-code. Placed on the side of the outer sleeve are two other bar codes, one for the Apple Store and the other for Google Play.

To check the products authenticity, you will find a label on the main box that also displays a bar-code, plus a reference code and serial number. Removing the outer sleeve you find a black box with the silver SMOK logo printed on the top. Just lift off the cover to access the contents inside.

People can suffer from allergies to chemicals that may be present in the makeup of certain types of E-liquids or produced in their vapour. The R200 TC has been thoroughly tested in Temperature mode as well as Variable Wattage mode to check for any potential dry burning issues as well.

The model sent is a pre-production version (Sample, Not for Sale), so please take this into account when evaluating my comments in the conclusion.

The R200 TC will be, as I understand it, the last in this current design with a new casing, chipset, and screen in the pipeline. Rumor has it that the first in this new livery will be in the stores within the next month to six weeks in a mini version, so not long to wait!


Here’s a quick introduction to the operational features of the R200 TC and a fond farewell from me as a user of this trustworthy series of devices.

Attach your tank or dripper as you prefer, primed and filled with your choice of E-Liquid and press the Power/Fire button five times in quick succession.

You will be met with a welcome message followed by the R200c and the current firmware version that is pre- installed on this device.

A message on the OLED will appear asking you if this is a new coil that has been attached. Select Yes if it is, or No if you have not changed it.

Use the +/- buttons to select either YES or No and press the Power/Fire button to confirm. The OLED will now display the main user screen and settings including the battery life, Wattage or Temperature depending on which option you have chosen to use based on the attached coil.

The resistance of the attached coil, voltage and the ramp up time is also displayed on the screen.

Wattage Mode

With the usual impressive range from 1 watt, all the way up to 200 watts and firing down to 0.1Ω’s and up to 3Ω’s the dedicated sub-ohm vaper as always is more than catered for with this current model.

Temperature Mode

Temperature Control mode operates between 200°F (100°C) and 600°F (315°C) You have a choice of three sub menus when Temperature Mode has been selected.

  1. Strength: Soft-Min-Normal-Hard-Max
  2. Coil TC-Ni Single Coil (SC) Dual Coil (DC)
  3. Adjustment of the preset Coefficient Value can also be applied.

Here is a breakdown for you of the ten top tier menus and the functionality of each one. To Access these menus press the Power/Fire button three times in quick succession and then once more to circle through each of the ten available options.

Once you have found the option you wish to change, hold the Power/Fire button in for a second to enter it.

A more detailed description of the menu functions themselves can be located inside the included user manual.


Options Menu

To access the options menu press the fire button three times in quick succession.


You can select either Wattage Mode or Temp mode from this menu.

Option 2

You can choose between the three types of coils that the R200 TC will support, which is currently Titanium, Nickel, or Steel.

When you have selected the option that matches the attached coil type, you can opt to change between single and dual coils configurations by waiting for a sub menu to appear before exiting option two.

SC denotes the use of a single coil and DC indicates the use of a dual coil set up. Pressing the fire button lets you set the coil options between SC & DC when you have selected option two and Titanium, Nickel or Steel is visible on the screen.

Option 3

You can modify the ramp up start time between Temp Min Soft, Normal, Hard, and Max during the first few seconds of activating the firing button inside this menu screen. There is a deviation of plus 10% (Hard) or minus 10% (Soft) from the preset (Normal) settings value.

Normal mode will fire the device at the set wattage or temperature value that you have pre-determined. Example Output value is set to 10w.

In Normal mode, the device will fire at 10w. In the Soft mode, the device will fire from 9w and up to the preset 10w within a two-second time frame after activating the fire button. In Hard mode, the device will fire at 11w and down to the preset 10w within the two seconds from activating the fire button.

Option 4

Allows you to select and adjust the OLED screens illumination time by using the up and down buttons to select your preferred duration.

Option 5

Displays the puff counter where you can set the limit of puffs that you think you will require to best suit your vaping habit!

It is pre-set to 0 (Never) and by using the +/- buttons you have the option to adjust it to a value of your choice.

Option 6

The Screen orientation can be changed to suit either a left hander or right handed user making viewing of the devices displayed information more comfortable.

Option 7

Here you have the option to adjust the preset heat coefficient values for Titanium. The value is of great importance to avoid burning your Organic Cotton.

Option 8

Adjustable Initial Resistance has been designed to ensure your resistance remains constant with an offset range between +/- 50mΩ (+/-0.05Ω). Temp sensing coils can suffer from this problem that may not be so apparent in wattage mode through poor contact of the atomizer depending on how loosely or tightly it is attached to the device where a deviation of as much as 0.02Ω can be recorded.

As an example of this is at 0.01Ω’s an error of up to 10 degrees Celsius can occur, so this adjustment will help to improve the overall vaping experience for you.

Option 9

Use this menu to set the current date.

Option 10

Press the fire button five times once again in quick succession to turn the device off.

Useful Shortcuts

By holding down the fire button and the up button you can take a shortcut to access either the wattage mode or the Temp mode depending on which coil you have attached to the device at the time.

Once you have set your desired Wattage or Temperature, hold down the up & down buttons simultaneously and the preset value you have set will be locked. To unlock for further adjustments to be applied simply hold down the up and down buttons once again.

The R200 TC also has a built in overall locking feature that can be turned on or off by pressing the fire button x5 in quick successions when the device in switched on to prevent you from accidentally firing the device.

So, this appears to be the last model we will see in the familiar M80 style of casing. SMOK have opted to use this current version to sign off on a new and much-improved version on the way boasting, I have been informed, a larger and easier to read OLED with an improved user interface and upgraded chip as well.

I’m also hopeful that we will see a three battery designed device from them soon to supply a full day’s vaping power when vaping at higher wattage settings and temperatures.

SMOK have signed off on this popular finish in style with the R 200-TC model, so I’m looking forward to seeing what the latest device has to offer us.

The R200 TC has performed extremely well in both modes with its customary rock solid feel and performance making it one of the most reliable, rugged, and trustworthy series that we have seen from them over the past year.

I’m still using my M80 Plus, which is a testament not only to this current series of devices build quality, but also the quality of the electronics to be found inside each model too, including the current one which speaks volumes about the Company and its team of design engineers.

The flush mounted 510 connector and surrounding air channels provide a solid connection and ample air flow around the seated tanks and drippers I’ve used during this review, helping to produce excellent flavour and huge clouds as you would expect with such a powerful device.

With an increase in power comes battery drain and very quickly too! So I would suggest that SMOK looks into designing a tri-cell configuration ASAP that will be better suited for this type of high powered device.

The buttons are well-placed, clearly marked, and readily available although a little dated now, producing a tactile feel and a soft audible click.

The OLED screen is bright but by today’s standards needs to be increased in size.

This current design has served SMOK well but it’s time for the next generation devices to be rolled out to meet the demands of today’s vapers. And as we know SMOK is a Company that rarely disappoints its loyal customers.

On a purely personal note I hope they will design and build an RDA to fit into the lineup which is one thing I’m surprised they haven’t come up with as yet, but you just never know with these guys what’s around the corner!


The battery compartment is situated at the base of the R200 with a simple but effective sliding mechanism that works well making a reliable connection and reducing the possibility of any rattle from inside. Pay close attention when placing the 2x 18650 high drain cells inside that they are the correct way round.

No dry hits either, so another winner to sign off on.
