Hot on the heels of their extremely popular Subox Mini starter kit comes yet another example of a stylish product from Kangertech that performs like a dream, and won’t break the bank.

The new TopBox Mini Starter Kit Platinum Version (KBOX Mini Device) including their latest top filling tank the TopTank Mini has been sent to me for review, and I have to say at this point it looks and feels like a very classy piece of workmanship straight out of the box.

There is a choice of coil options in the kit which should satisfy the demands of all types of vapers. These include the 0.5 Ω SS coil (Stainless Steel TC) 0.15 Ω Ni 200 coil (TC) 0.5 Ω Clapton coil, along with a Mini RBA Section. So it looks like they have all corners covered on face value with this one. It also works perfectly well with the new SSOCC atomizer too.

The TopBox Mini is primarily a Temperature Controlled device that can fire up to 75W with a temperature control range set between 100 – 300C / 200 – 600F and fire down to a resistance value of 0.1 ohm’s.

Perfect for the new and experienced users alike, the TopBox Mini Starter Kit – Platinum is going to get your attention for sure.

Function & Performance

Included in this review for the purpose of testing is a selection of two types of E-Liquids with varying PG/VG combinations from Five Fold Vapor and Dark Market.

I have also used the supplied 4ml Kanger TopTank along with the latest Yokozuna Sub Ohm Tank from Japan. If you are already a supplier or intend to supply this range of E-Liquids, please make sure that they meet the current safety requirements set out by your countries regulatory bodies.

REACH compliant

For EU countries, more information on this can be found here along with REACH’s partner agencies from around the globe.

If you are already a supplier or intend to supply these E-Liquids, please make sure they meet the current requirements set out by your countries regulatory bodies.

People can suffer from allergies to chemicals that may be present in the makeup of certain types of E-liquids or produced in their vapour. People can become sensitive to or even allergic to Nickel or Titanium used in Temperature Controlled designed coils. So, please be aware of this and seek medical advice before using any of the products used in my reviews. Also, check with your E-liquid supplier or the equipment manufacturers directly before purchasing and use.

You might find this range of calculators provided by Steam Engine particularly useful, so thank you to Lars for allowing me to include them in my reviews. These calculators are currently under development, and the information that they contain may change at any time without notice. Please read the How It Works section for a more in-depth understanding. Also, never leave your device charging unattended, make sure you are using the recommended battery for your device, and always remember, SAFETY FIRST.

Here is an overview of the operation and functionality of the TopBox Mini Platinum. A more in-depth look is provided in the included User Manual.

The 22mm diameter TopTank is your first port of call. Unscrew the base and prime your coil with some E-Liquid. Add a few drops into the top section and then soak the organic cotton through the two large circular holes on the side and the smaller singular hole as well.

The coil that the TopTank came fitted with in my case was the 0.15 Ω Ni200 TC coil. By unscrewing this from the base, you should see a blue O-ring at the bottom just below the four air intake slots. You will need to replace your coils from time to time so a quick check now is a very good idea to see the inserted coil type, and how to change them when required.

Re-attach the base unit and unscrew the top to fill the 4ml capacity with E-Liquid remembering to pour it in from the sides and not through the centre. Allow about five minutes for the cotton to become fully saturated with your chosen flavour before vaping.

Attach the TopTank to the KBOX Mini via the 510 connector on top of the device, insert the correct battery type (the right way up) via the magnetic battery compartment and you should be good to go.

Placing the device on the table in an upright position (vertical) you will see that the power/ Fire button sits above the OLED screen close to the 510 connector and your attached tank.

Below the OLED screen are two more slightly smaller buttons for making adjustments. The top one of these is the + button and the one situated just below it is the – button. Depending on your choice of screen orientation they will perform the same function. I mention this as the buttons themselves do not have the + &- engraved on them, so I hope this helps to avoid any confusion.

Press the On/Off – Fire button five times in quick succession and you will see the words Kanger Tech appear on the OLED screen shortly followed by the words New Atomizer with a Yes Or No option.

Use the two buttons underneath the OLED screen to select either option which in this case is yes, as you are using it for the very first time.

With the ability to vape in either Temperature Control Or Variable Wattage you need to pay particular attention to which coil you are using at the time and select the correct combination. By pressing the On/Off – Fire button three times in quick succession, you can switch between either VW & TC mode as well as select the correct coil type from the choices which are supported by this device.

To do this press the Power/Fire button three times in quick succession where the display will show you the choice of options available to select. Each time you press the Power/Fire button three times a new one will be displayed until you find the one that you require.

In Temperature Control mode you set your desired value by pressing either the plus+ button to increase the temperature or the minus- button to decrease the current value in increments of ten.

Similarly, in Variable Wattage mode you can use the same controls to increase or decrease the current wattage value in increments of one.

The screen’s orientation can be flipped 180 degrees by holding down the two smaller buttons below the OLED screen simultaneously to match your preferred viewing angle.

To lock in a preset temperature or wattage that you like to vape at, simply hold down all three buttons simultaneously and no further adjustments can be applied directly or by accident until you perform the same action again to unlock these control functions. Sadly Kanger has not included a lock/unlock icon which needs to be included as a visual aid.

And finally to turn the device off Press the On/Off – Fire button five times in quick succession and you will see the words OFF appear on the OLED screen. Irrespective of whether you have set the lock function to be on or off, the device will still turn off and on again. It will also remember your last settings and in which mode you left the lock function in.

This kit is going to be a winner in my opinion. Both the new tank design and the solid performance of the device itself shows clearly that Kanger are back on track and I’ve personally enjoyed using it and will continue to do so.

The new tank has improved with the ability to fill from the top, but I would still very much like to see an airflow adjustment positioned at the top of the tank instead of the bottom, with the ability to adjust the juice flow inlet to the coil as well, which is something I found to be very useful in a previous review conducted quite recently.

As always, both the vapour production and flavour were excellent and improved further still with the RBA. With a choice of coil options included with this kit, Kanger has made this a more than worthwhile addition to their collection. To help avoid the possibility of leaks (minimal) through the air inlet valve, keep your tank filled above one-third at all times.

I have used the TopTank on many devices without any issues so far, and I have used the device itself with a combination of other brands of atomizers that I have not mentioned in this review.

The body is a solid stainless steel construction, albeit slightly heavy, that should comfortably stand up to the rigours of daily life without too much trouble. The 510 connector is rock solid with plenty of airflow channels laser cut into the top allowing for a flush mount and good connection of the tanks I’ve used on it to date.

The magnetic battery cover is absolutely fine with only a very slight amount of movement occurring, causing a slight gap to appear at the very top of the housing. In fact, you cannot feel this happening while the device sits in the palm of your hand, and you have to look very closely to be aware of it at all. Venting of the battery is achieved through the logo on the case.

The buttons are comfortable to operate with a nice tactile feel to them, and well placed for easy access and adjustment around the very clear and bright OLED screen. However, I did notice that the + & – symbols are on the OLED screen but not the corresponding two buttons on my version.

Clearly, they need to be included on the final version to avoid any confusion when dialling in the numbers depending on what screen orientation you are using! I hope my earlier explanation has helped to clear this up a little for you.

Menu navigation is very simple and straight forward which is one thing I have always liked about Kanger’s products, and clearly as this could very well be the choice for new users looking to purchase their first temperature controlled device, it’s a very important factor to consider not only for the end user but the retailer as well.

Placement of the micro USB for the purpose of charging the battery is well situated allowing you to stand the device upright. As to the best of my knowledge this port is used only for charging and not for firmware upgrades.

The locking function works well but lacks an on-screen icon which may cause a problem for people who are unaware of this. A lock-unlock symbol needs to be included too.

It looks like you are unable to adjust the wattage setting in TC mode which is also confusing if you happened to have read the supplied card in the box with suggestions of between 20-45W when using the supplied and pre-installed Ni 200 coil to obtain the best flavour? If I switch from a non-temperature sensing coil to one that does, whatever value I had set previously, for example, 35W will now be reset to the maximum value of 75W with no way of changing it. So, please take this into account before attempting to do so.

So to sum up the TopBox Mini Platinum 75W TCD kit for you I have to say they have done an extremely good job overall apart from a few very minor niggles.

Expected price range appears to be around the £65.00 or $90.00 mark.
