Innokins engineering team and designers have been working quietly behind the scenes over the past eight months on a joint project with Evolv technology a leading American producer of the finest technologically advanced microchips purely with the aim of producing a precision cutting edge 20w Personal Vaporizer.
Housed in a sleek simplistic, but overwhelmingly stylish looking all stainless steel body incorporating gentle curves that caters for both interchangeable 18650 and 18350 battery tubes along with interchangeable 510 and eGo cone threaded adapter caps for flush mounting of your desired choice of tank. Clearly, this was no easy task to undertake.
To achieve this and include the technology required to provide the consumer with a state of the art personal vaporizer that is both intuitive and easy to use, a customized 20 watt Evolv Experience Microchip has been installed that includes step- down technology.
After receiving my Pre-release version of the new iTaste SVD2.0 direct from Innokin for the purpose of this review the only word I could think of that best describes it is unique. The beauty of this device lies not only in its joint design & technological advances but also in the quality of build, reminiscent of the now famed VTR thanks to the high-grade stainless steel finish.
Initial appearances can sometimes be deceptive particularly when in picture form, so don’t be in the least bit surprised to find the SVD 2.0 is no lightweight. It has been built to withstand the rigors of daily life yet still retain a compact and stylish appearance.
The iTaste SVD2.0 arrived in a tamper evident plastic sealed, and security labeled brown cardboard box the top fascia of which displays the Innokin logo in the top left-hand corner with the Evolv trademark in the top right. Beneath this is the model name, I taste SVD2.0 American made Evolv Experience 20W Chipset. Premium Advanced Personal Vaporizer.
The front section includes some of the Technical Specifications included with the device along with the choice of two colours that the SVD2.0 comes in. Stainless and Black (Check you have the correct color before leaving the store!) with the bar-coded label and scratch checker for authenticity situated below this. There is also a notification making you aware that batteries in either the 18650 or 1830 configurations are not included, or a cleromizer.
On both the left and right-hand side of the box, you will see SVD2.0 and finally the base which includes a Warning for both age and health. Please read this fully before purchasing this device. Also please check the warranty period should any be included with this device before purchase.
Removing the top lid of the box, you will find the case with the Innokin logo that houses your iTaste SVD2.0 personal vaporizer in its 18650 configurations with attached 510 removable adaptor cap along with a separate 18350 battery tube and eGo threading adaptor cap as well. Innokin has included a wrist strap that can be found inside the case also. And finally the ingenious 3.7v battery level power tester.
Situated directly underneath the case you will find the user manual and a multilingual pamphlet indicating the safest way to dispose of waste batteries and electrical and electronic equipment. There is also a sticker displaying the Innokin logo twice.
It was not only good to see a well-featured device designed in modular form with all the advantages that it has to offer the consumer, but also the user-friendly interface. The iTaste SVD2.0 boasts a raft of features in its design not least the increase in power compared with former models to a maximum of 20 watts which is ample for the non-cloud enthusiasts!
The inclusion of a good shower proof carry case was a very nice addition too, including a lanyard, making it safer to transport your SVD on journeys outside of the home environment. This keeps it very well protected, and allowing you to carry some additional spares with you just in case you need them. Its size allows for the inclusion of three other 18350 batteries or two 18650 batteries with extra pockets for atomizers and building supplies.
The amount of time and detail that has gone into designing the SVD 2.0 is evident not only by the inclusion of the Evolv DNA 20w Experience microchip, but a very smart battery charge indicator that is attached inside the case itself. By attaching both magnets to either end of your 3.7v battery (+/-), the five-step power level indicator will display the amount of charge remaining.
Please be aware that the iTaste SVD2.0 does not allow for two stacked batteries, and any other type than that which is recommended could damage your personal vaporizer. The recommended battery types for this device are the IMR High Drain 18350/18490/18650 (without protection. Maximum current 5000mA)
The iTaste SVD 2.0 has an Input voltage of 3.2-4.3v and an output voltage of 2.0-6.3v. The highest output current is 6.0A while the output wattage is between 5.0-20w, with a resistance range of 0.5-3.0 and the minimum being 0.5ohm’s.
For those of you who have read some of my previous reviews, you will know by now that I happen to be a big fan of modular designed devices for three excellent reasons, so it was great to see Innokin take advantage of at least two of these, and I hope in time all three!
Firstly the ability to replace damaged parts should the user be unfortunate enough to require to do so and incur the cost of a new device. “Not nice” Being modular you will only have to replace the damaged section keeping your repair bill to an absolute minimum.
Secondly, having the advantage of interchangeable 18650 (143mm) and 18350 (114mm) battery tubes with interchangeable 510/ego threading adapter caps as well, allows you to configure the device in a way that best suits your preferred choice of setup. Male or Female it has been designed with your personal comfort in mind. There is also an 18490 battery tube available which will be sold as a separate item.
And finally, the option to customize the original design whether it be through colour, engraving or both! The battery comes in two colour options as standard, Stainless steel or black. However, Innokin could offer further options by including some limited edition battery tubes in a choice of suitable colour schemes, or with the inclusion of classic Chinese engravings. Currently, you will find the inscription iTaste SVD2.0 on the current models.
As you can see a modular design creates greater flexibility as to how you choose to vape without incurring the cost of two separate devices to do so in a size that best suits you.
A new center pin has also been included with an advanced and reliable spring mechanism allowing for perfect fitting of all current main tanks according to Innokin. This is indeed the case with the tanks/cleromizers I have used during my testing of the SVD2.0 so far, and all have flush mounted perfectly. Also, you will find six laser cut air channels in the top of the 510 cap to maximise the airflow should require it.
All three function buttons have been designed to be water resistant and are placed on the reverse side of the OLED screen. Step down technology has also been included. To protect the DNA Experience microchip and the battery from an incorrectly inserted battery the SVD2.0 comes with reverse polarity protection as well as a 25-second cut off safety feature. For a more comprehensive look at all the included features view the detailed manual included with your device.
For product authenticity, Innokin has added a unique onboard serial number that will also be used for the purpose of validating your device and registering it to use the limited warranty for repairs. For further details read the included manual or consult with your local vendor before purchase. Alternatively, you can contact Innokin directly via their website
For the purpose of conducting this review, I have used a selection of three different E-juices with varying PG/VG combinations from Longhorn Vapor, G2 Vapor, and a 100% VG E-juice from the Virgin Vapor collection.
If you intend to use this range of E-Liquids, please make sure they meet the current requirements set out by your countries regulatory bodies.
For EU countries, more information on this can be found here along with REACH’s partner agencies from around the globe.
E-Liquids may contain diacetyl (DA) and acetyl propionyl (AP) or other carcinogenic ingredients or disease-causing substances, so please be aware of this and seek medical advice before using any of the products used in my reviews.
People can suffer from allergies to chemicals that may be present in the makeup of certain types of E-liquids or produced in their vapour. People can become sensitive to, or even allergic to Nickel or Titanium used in Temperature Controlled designed coils. Again, please be aware of this and seek medical advice before using any of the products used in my reviews. Also, check with your E-liquid supplier or the equipment manufacturers directly before purchase and use.
You might find this range of calculators provided by Steam Engine particularly useful, so thank you to Lars for allowing me to include them in my reviews. These calculators are currently under development, and the information that they contain may change at any time without notice. Please read the How It Works section for a more in-depth understanding. And never leave your device charging unattended, make sure you are using the recommended battery for your device, and always remember, SAFETY FIRST.
Potential Polycarbonate problems
It is well known that certain e-liquid ingredients can cause cracking or even melting of polycarbonate plastic or acrylic tanks and tubes. For further information on this subject, please check with your E-juice supplier or contact the manufacturer directly.
I have been using the SVD2.0 now for just over two weeks constantly to test the functionality of this device as thoroughly as possible and also to gauge its overall performance for you.
Straight out of the box you will find that the SVD2.0 comes already configured in the 18650 mode with the 510 adapter attached. Just unscrew the base cap and insert your 3.7v 18650 battery taking care to insert it the right way up and re- attach the battery cap securely. Attach your atomizer to the adapter cap, press the power On/Off button three times in quick succession to turn the device on and you’re good to go. It really is that simple! By holding the power button down, you can commence vaping straight away.
To turn the device off simply press the power button three times again in quick succession and you will see on the OLED display “Locked click 3x”.
There is also a sleep mode function included which activates after 30 seconds if the device is not used, and the screen will power off automatically.
The SVD2.0 has a vaping range between 5watts and 20watts (An increase of 5watts over previous models) creating more power, and, of course, increased flavour and vapor output!
To adjust the power settings of the device simply increase or decrease the power output by changing the wattage increase + or wattage decrease – in 0.1 increments using the OLED screen to view the adjustments made.
You will notice that this being a variable wattage device the SVD2.0 Personal Vaporizer takes care of the voltage setting for you based on the resistance of the attached atomizer.
Innokin has included a smart locking function as well to make your vaping experience that little bit more enjoyable and keeps the power output set to your selected value without accidentally changing it by mistake and frying the juice!!!
To activate this function with the power turned on press the plus and minus buttons together for five seconds to lock the currently selected wattage. The screen will display POWER LOCKED HOLDUP DOWN, Please note that all other functions will still work, and only the wattage adjustment will remain locked. To unlock it press the + plus and – minus buttons simultaneously once again for five seconds.
The iTaste SVD2.0 will display error messages on the OLED screen when and should they occur. They include: Check Atomizer, Short Circuit, Check the Battery, Overheat Protection, Battery Low, and Voltage Reset. When the battery voltage is lower than 3.1volts and the fire button is pressed the Check Battery warning will be displayed. You can take advantage of the battery power level tester included inside the case. There is also a 25-second cut off built in for your safety as well.
A further precaution to protect both you and the device will be displayed should the PCB (printed circuit board) overheat due to prolonged usage (over vaping) The screen will show the error message “TOO HOT” Like the device itself!
The combined effort between Innokin and Elov for this project has started a second chapter in the history of premium devices built by Innokin, and I feel that we can expect this partnership to continue for the foreseeable future.
Let me first start off by saying that today’s market has been transformed by the variety of devices on offer to the consumer compared with days gone by. So simply measuring the performance of a manufacturer’s device based solely on its output regarding wattage compared with that of others currently available producing more, seems a somewhat pointless exercise.
We are lucky enough to have the choice between VV/VW devices VW devices Mechanical Devices and so on in a plethora of differing colours and styles all thanks to the hard work and ingenuity of the individual companies and designers who devote their time and efforts to creating a safer alternative to the traditional analogue cigarette for us.
The beauty of choice allows us as individuals to choose how we wish to vape. Is it simply to replace the daily habit of a cigarette? Create a sub ohm builds for use with a new Mechanical mod, or to compete in a cloud chasing competition? Vaping has become so diverse that the individual requirements between them vary greatly especially concerning the power output that is now required.
So clearly as a reviewer I look at the individual qualities of both the build and performance of each device sent to me for review against the recommended retail price (in my opinion is this value for money for the consumer?) as to compare them in any other way would create a misleading impression.
The iTaste SVD2.0 is a truly awesome device that you cannot fail to be impressed by. The quality of the all stainless steel body matches that of the now legendary iTaste VTR that will remain a personal all-time favourite of mine due to its solid build quality and lasting performance.
The advantage of the SVD2.0 being a variable wattage device for people who wish to upgrade to a larger and more powerful personal vaporizer is that the Evolv Experience Chip does all the calculations on your behalf. Simply dial in the wattage of your choice and the iTaste SVD2.0 will set the appropriate voltage based on the resistance of your attached atomizer with the ability to fire down as low as 0.5ohm’s.
The inclusion of step-down technology (bucking) thanks to the continued innovation from Evolv’s customized 20w DNA Experience microchip now allows you to go below your actual battery voltage. A very nice touch!
The OLED screen provides you with a clear and bright display if not a little on the small side for me personally, giving you all the required data at the touch of a button.
Being situated on the reverse side of the three switches to reduce, I would assume the overall height, be sure to place your finger on the button you wish to adjust before rotating the device 180 degrees to view the changes you want to make.
It would also be an added advantage to see some form of illumination of both the fire button and adjustment +/- buttons through either the logo illuminating on the power switch, or a circular ring around the outside of it, or even better the Innokin logo situated above all three and giving a visual display in, for example: Blue when the power switch is depressed, Green when the + button is activated, and Red when the – button has been activated. “Just a thought.”
The latest centre pin on the 510 adapter cap works well making flush mounting of your tanks/clearomizers that much easier, and attachment of my personal range of clearomizers to the eGo threading adapter seated well too.
The devices threading is well made so fitting of the battery housing in both configurations and the base cap allows for a seamless finish with quick interchangeability, and the firm spring loaded pin seated in the base cap makes for a good connection and a rattle free experience.
The Vape Gear Case with integrated battery power level tester that is included free with the iTaste SVD2.0 is now, as I am led to understand, also being sold as a separate item the price of which I’m unsure of but will endeavour to find out and update this for you at a later date. A larger version of it would be most welcome I’m sure, which can include the 18490 battery tube in as well!
The SVD2.0 in terms of both its overall performance and build quality at a recommended retail price of around £80.00 US$99.00 including the case is going to be very hard to beat as this is another masterpiece thanks to the combined efforts of both Innokin and Evolv. Please remember that the battery and cleromizer are not included.
