With the recent introduction of the TF-RTA G2 and G4 it should come as no surprise at all that SMOK would quickly build on their initial success and used their current tanks design to include something just that little bit more special!
Welcome to a review on the TF-RDTA that not only includes the latest features to be found on both the G2 & G4 but also, improved airflow control as you would expect from a well constructed RDA for increased performance in both vapour and most definitely in flavour production.
The deck like the G2 is based on the dual post velocity S2 style, with an increased surface area to comfortably include dual coil Clapton builds and any other type of wire you care to mention.
Thanks to its unique two in one design SMOK have been able to increase the capacity of the tank too, and when you consider that the TF-RDTA comes pre-installed with 0.2Ω high-quality dual fused Clapton coils you’re going to need every drop of juice you can get- believe me!
SMOK have included juice control into this design as well plus the ability to further reduce the likelihood of leaks, thanks to a hidden sealing ring situated below the decking area itself and a locking function to be doubly sure.
Also, take into account the improvements they have made with flush mounting their latest line of tanks onto a plethora of different devices that was first seen on the recent release of their G2 & G4 models, and you will realise why SMOK are setting a president that others will find very hard to follow.
One further point worth mentioning before we take a look at what’s included in the box is the machining which is of a very standard indeed. This is mighty impressive when you consider that they have been massed produced not hand finished.
So what is in the box and what are the specifications of this latest little gem?

Operation & Performance
For the purpose of conducting this review, I have used a selection of two different E-Liquids with varying PG/VG combinations from Villain Vapours and their latest line Confection plus the included coils from SMOK and two 0.6 ohms prebuilt Helix 28G Kanthal A-1Clapton coils from Tradition Vapes.
Cotton of choice is the MUJI Japanese Organic Cotton as the flavour seems more intense with this brand, for me personally.
If you intend to use this range of E-Liquids, please make sure they meet the current requirements set out by your countries regulatory bodies.
For EU countries, more information on this subject can be found here along with REACH’s partner agencies from around the globe.
E-Liquids may contain Diacetyl (DA) and Acetyl Propionyl (AP) or other carcinogenic ingredients or disease-causing substances, so please be aware of this and seek medical advice before using any of the products used in my reviews.
People can suffer from allergies to chemicals that may be present in the makeup of particular types of E-liquids or produced in their vapour. People can become sensitive to or even allergic to Nickel or Titanium used in Temperature Controlled designed coils. Again, please be aware of this and seek medical advice before using any of the products used in my reviews. Also, check with your E-liquid supplier or the equipment manufacturers directly before purchase and use.
You might also find this range of calculators provided by Steam Engine particularly useful, so thank you to Lars for allowing me to include them in my reviews. These calculators are currently under development, and the information that they contain may change at any time without notice. Please read the How It Works section for a more in-depth understanding. And never leave your device charging unattended, make sure you are using the recommended battery for your device, and always remember, SAFETY FIRST.
For newcomers or inexperienced vapers to building your own coils you can find some excellent tutorials on YouTube so I would suggest looking at these initially to gain as much knowledge as possible before attempting a build by yourself.
The current RDTA has 0.2Ω dual fused Clapton wire pre-installed so you will only need to add your cotton to the build and apply your E-liquid.
Additionally, you can seek further advice from your local B&M store first of all or alternatively from more experienced vapers who can be contacted via the vaping forums. There’s plenty of help out there if you look for it, and never be afraid to ask for help.
The tank itself is almost identical in its design and construction to the TF-RTA G2/G4 with an increase in its juice capacity up from 4.5ml to 5ml and the swivel cap has been improved upon too since the introduction of the TFV4 as seen on both the G2 & G4 models.
The original 510 drip tip with airflow inlets for slipstreaming has been replaced with an outer metal casing and a glass inner to help reduce heat build-up in the mouthpiece along an entirely new airflow design which has been incorporated into the latest SMOK tank designs for improved performance at higher vaping temperatures.
The now familiar swivel top fill cap functions extremely well and makes filling the tank so much easier.
Juice flow control is smooth to operate giving you the opportunity to adjust the amount required at any given time. This is a very useful if you chain vape as an example because you have the ability to increase the liquid volume supplied to the coil reducing the risk of that dreaded and all too common dry hit.
The juice flow control now appears to be a little firmer than that found on the earlier G2 & G4 samples that I reviewed so this small issue appears to have been fully addressed.
With an improved anti-leak seal added and the ability to fully close off the juice flow, leaks have become a thing of the past just like we have seen in the two recent releases from SMOK.
Airflow is more than ample to cope with the high-temperature settings which the TF-RDTA has clearly been designed for. Make sure you have these fully open when vaping from 70watts and upward.
The base of the tank houses an airflow inlet of around 5.5mm, and on the inside situated directly below each of the two pre-built Clapton coils you will see two fairly large holes allowing the air to pass on to each one from beneath.
Coupled with a fully adjustable side airflow control system you have the ability to fine tune your airflow for maximum performance at any wattage or temperature setting that the tank supports.
You also have the ability to switch decks thanks to a cleverly modified base unit creating more latitude to add in future deck designs further down the line, without having to purchase a whole new body to do so.
In order to remove the deck from the base simply use the two large posts as purchase and unscrew it taking care not to move the position of each of the attached coils. Threading like all parts on the RDTA is very smooth.
510 positive pin is made of stainless steel and allows you to flush mount the TF-RDTA onto pretty much any device you care to mention.
The velocity style deck is very spacious and a joy to build on. The two posts have an increased size allowing you to insert your coils very easily indeed making life so much easier, and with a removable deck from the base cap as I have just mentioned, once again SMOK appear to have all options covered for ease of access!
The two pre-installed Dual Fused Clapton coils (0.2Ωs) are very impressive too and a very nice addition allowing you to get started that much quicker. The ranges recommended for use are set between 50w and 140w with an optimum performance range of 70w to 100w.
Situated beneath the deck is the insulator which I believe to be Delrin and below this for large juice flow holes for improved wicking of your E-Liquid and of course the fully insulated stainless steel 510 pin.
I’ve used the latest RDTA between the optimum ranges suggested by SMOK of 70w and 100 watts without any sign of a dry hit so far, which in itself is quite impressive considering this is and RDTA and not an RDA.
SMOK have preinstalled two coils already so you will only need to add some Organic Cotton and apply your preferred E-Liquid to both, fill the tank from the top remembering to close off the adjustable juice flow control while filling up your tank.
You will need to open and set it again after filling to obtain the best results for wicking depending on the PG/VG balance of your liquid and the output voltage being applied to both of the coils.
With the correct balance set between the Juice flow control and the four-way side air flow control ring, the RDTA produces some remarkably dense clouds and some mighty flavoursome vapes.
Check your resistances and make sure you are using a device (preferably a regulated device) that can support this type of low Sub Ohm Vaping. Personally, I can see little reason to use mechanical mods and if you choose to do so make sure you have the knowledge and experience to avoid potentially serious injury.
Look for signs of any hotspots that may require adjusting with ceramic tweezers on each of the attached coils. Pulse them and look for an even glow across the surface area of each one and tweak them if necessary.
Check for shorts with your Ohm’s metre (I use the CoilMaster) before adding any Organic Cotton and juice to the coils. Once you are happy with your build place just enough cotton through each of the coils to allow you to fold it back at each end under each one or alternatively, you can insert it into each of the four juice channels situated underneath.
Paint both the coils and the cotton with a sufficient amounts of E juice, screw the velocity deck back into the main tank, open the swivel cap on top of the tank and pour in 5ml of liquid to fill it up. Open the juice flow control and if you have used the locking feature make sure that it is now unlocked and you should be good to go.
Attach the tank to your chosen device making sure the display if you are using it on a regulated device, shows no errors and the correct resistance for this current build. Then enjoy some awesome flavour and immense vapour production.
To quickly summarise this latest masterpiece from SMOK for you, they have come just about as close to the performance of an RDA as I’ve experienced so far. Both the G2 and G4 4 models recently released have made huge inroads into both flavour performance and vapour production but I think this latest model has a slight edge on these two for flavour.
It’s another quality piece that is extremely well designed and manufactured with excellent machining for a mass produced product. The Clapton coils get a special mention and when you see the finish for yourself you will be as equally impressed as I was.
Once again no sign of a dry hit at very high temperatures, and the four large fully adjustable airflows holes situated around the outside of the coils combined with the bottom airflow most defiantly helps with this.
It might be more useful and certainly more productive I feel to place the side airflow control facing the coils directly on future upgrades to this particular design and the ability to close off one side of the airflow for single coil builds.
And when you add in the fully adjustable juice flow control to the equation, set up correctly for the output you have pre-determined, you will come to the same conclusion as me. A winner!
There is also a little bit of movement on the top part of the tank that I noticed but this is minimal and caused no real concerns. To be quite honest you really have to look for it to find it so it can’t be that bad.
Again no leaking problems whatsoever on this or the G2 and G4 models so SMOK has done a remarkable job here as well.
That just about wraps this one up so I’ll be back with another review for you in the next few weeks. In the meantime drop by your local B&M store and check it out for yourselves
Recommended for the flavour enthusiast.
