OBS Technology, a Company that is quickly gaining a reputation amongst vaping enthusiasts for designing and manufacturing high-quality atomisers at very affordable prices, have come up with some very ingenious ideas for their latest Engine RTA.
These include a top airflow system to stop leaking, a smart fill concept for its large 5.2ml capacity tank, along with improvements to the air circulation within the chamber itself to reduce the buildup of heat by up to 30%.
With so much competition out there you have to be to stand out from the crowd, and OBS are finding ways to do this so let’s find out how.
The Engine RTA comes in a sealed Orange & White gift box that includes the following information: Authentication Scratch Code, Q&A Code, Website address, plus a brief description of the product itself which can be found on the rear of the box.

Operation & Performance
For the purpose of conducting this review, I have used a selection of E-Liquids by Majestic and Conviction. I have also used the latest G-Priv Device sent to me directly from SMOKTECH.
If you intend to use this range of E-Liquids, please make sure they meet the current requirements set out by your countries regulatory bodies.
For EU countries, more information on this subject can be found here along with REACH’s partner agencies from around the globe.
E-Liquids may contain Diacetyl (DA) and Acetyl Propionyl (AP) or other carcinogenic ingredients or disease-causing substances, so please be aware of this and seek medical advice before using any of the products used in my reviews.
People can suffer from allergies to chemicals that may be present in the makeup of particular types of E-liquids or produced in their vapour. People can become sensitive to or even allergic to Nickel or Titanium used in Temperature Controlled designed coils. Again, please be aware of this and seek medical advice before using any of the products used in my reviews. Also, check with your E-liquid supplier or the equipment manufacturers directly before purchase and use.
You might also find this range of calculators provided by Steam Engine particularly useful, so thank you to Lars for allowing me to include them in my reviews. These calculators are currently under development, and the information that they contain may change at any time without notice. Please read the How It Works section for a more in-depth understanding. And never leave your device charging unattended, make sure you are using the recommended battery for your device, and always remember, SAFETY FIRST.
For inexperienced vapers to building your own coils you can find some excellent tutorials on YouTube so I would suggest looking at these to gain as much knowledge as possible before attempting a build by yourself.
Additionally, you can seek further advice from your local vape store first, or more experienced vapers to be found in the chat rooms. There’s plenty of help out there if you look and never be frightened to ask.
The first thing you are going to need to decide is whether to construct a single or dual coil build as you have the option of both with the Engine RTA.
Firstly, remove the outer quartz glass casing by unscrewing the base unit. You will see the 17mm velocity deck with two posts, each one having two 2mm post holes for inserting the coil or coils.
Loosen the grub screws off, allowing you to insert your coil/coils making sure one end connects to the positive post and the other end is attached to the negative post.
Tighten down the grub screws to secure each coil into place and remove any excess wire by using your cutters. Repeat this process on the opposite side and you should now have two coils positioned ready to insert your organic cotton. You can use the Allen key to align the coil/coils if they are not in the correct horizontal position.
Remember at this point to make sure that the coils are not coming into direct contact with either of the posts or could come into contact with the outer casing when it is replaced, causing a short.
Also, make sure each of the coils is directly aligned with the airflow channels which will help to create the maximum amount flavour. You will notice two locating pins that need to be aligned when re-connecting it.
Use your ohm’s metre to check the resistance of your build and check for shorts before test firing the coils.
Next, attach the base cap with the attached velocity deck to your device and pulse the coils, using ceramic tweezers to make any small adjustments to the spacing of each coil in order to remove any hotspots looking for an even glow across each of the coils surface areas.
Cut either one or two strips of organic cotton to length depending on whether you have chosen to use one or two coils in your build. Then insert these through each coil making sure you have allowed enough at both ends to fit into the juice wells underneath.
And finally, apply your e-liquid making sure the coil/coils and the organic cotton are coated sufficiently, but not excessively.
Replace the base cap carefully, once again making sure that neither of the coils is touching the posts or outer metal casing, as I have already mentioned. Fill the tank from the very cleverly designed side fill system and you should be good to go.
For a more detailed description on how to build and fill the Engine RTA follow the instructions in their well-documented and illustrated user manual.
After reviewing the Cheetah and the Engine from OBS Technology I’m beginning to understand why they have made a name for themselves in such a relatively short period of time.
There is little, if anything really that you can find fault with in both cases.
Firstly, they have made a conical shaped 510 drip tip for added comfort which is secured firmly into place by the use of two O-rings.
The top airflow system has three inlets which can be equally opened or closed via the control ring, greatly reducing the amount of heat at higher temperatures. The other added bonus with having a top airflow design is not having to worry about leaking E-liquid. Something I’ve been talking about for almost 2 years now. Top airflow that is!
The airflow system is complex in its design but makes a huge difference in circulating the airflow around the coils, as this diagram clearly demonstrates, reducing the internal build-up of heat by as much as 30%.
Apart from the excellent flavour that is generated by the Engine RTA the smart fill system that they have incorporated into its design has to be the best I’ve seen to date.
Simply slide up the ring with the OBS logo located between the airflow control ring and the quartz glass tank to reveal the side filling juice inlet. Once filled just slide it back into place.
The 17mm Velocity deck and base are one unit so do not try to unscrew the deck from the base! There is ample room for building on and you will notice that the Engine has an E-Liquid reservoir situated inside the base cap itself so be sure to allow enough cotton through the holes for wicking to avoid dry hits.
One small part of the deck that could be improved upon is an increase in the diameter of the post holes to 3mm for thicker coil types plus a gold plated deck to help improvement electrical conductivity.
A Gold plated pin has been added but as I have mentioned in the Cheetah review it’s nonadjustable and a fully adjustable one would be a far better option.
Machining once again is very good with smooth threading and a stylish finish that will appeal to many vapers I’m sure. Please be aware that the Chimney is not removable so do not attempt to unscrew it!
That concludes the review of the Engine so stay tuned for a closer look at the Frost Wyrm from OBS Technology over the next few weeks.
Highly recommended for the price. RRP around £26.00-$30.00
