Vandy Vapes Kylin Mini RTA follows on from the earlier release of their Kylin RTA, in a choice of four colour schemes and a unique 180° honeycomb airflow system.

Yes, as the name suggests, it’s smaller in size than the original Kylin, but what surprised me was the size of the gold-plated build deck and just how quick and easy it was to re-wick if you know how and follow the instructions. More to come on that a little later in the review.

It’s primarily designed with the sub-Ohm flavour chaser in mind, and surprisingly, it’s not short on cloud production either. You have the choice of two different tank capacities (3ml-5ml) two Delrin drip tips and a heap of spare parts.

So, let’s not waste any more time on the introduction and see what you can expect for your money!

Building the RTA section

One of the most important factors with an RTA, RDA, or RDTA to get the best possible performance is getting the build just right.

This will change depending on the make and model, but I hope to get you into the ballpark quickly, leaving you to make only finite adjustments for the perfect setup.

First things first before we begin.

Please pay attention to the image below which shows the gold-plated deck.

You will notice that the airflow inlets will only cover coils that are situated inside this area and anything outside of it i.e. larger coil types could very well be subjected to dry burning issues, due to the lack of air circulation around the increased surface area.

So, make sure your coil sits between the centre markings on the deck plate and directly in line with the 180° airflow holes to minimise the chance of this happening. 3mm coils should be an ideal length.

The Kylin mini offers you two options to fix the single coil into place either by using the M4 Philips screw head or, the Allen key fitting screw head. So now is a good time to choose your preferred type of post screws!

Firstly, attach your coil to the deck and shorten the legs to the correct length for a clean fit inside the space provided. Take your time and reduce the height slowly so as not to destroy a perfectly good coil simply because you cut too much off to start with!

Use a tool to straighten it and then tighten up the screws to secure it in place

Once this is done, check it is fixed between the centre lines and lined up within the matrix of internal air holes and not touching any part of the decks base or sides.

Use your Ohm’s metre before adding any cotton just in case you have a short.

Now is a good time to test fire your device and look out for any signs of hot spots that may require adjusting with ceramic tweezers on the coil itself.

Pulse it and look for an even glow across its surface area and adjust if necessary.

If all these checks are good, it’s time to add the cotton.

Use a diameter that fits comfortably through the coil. Neither too tight or too loose.

You will notice on each side of the decking two juice channels. The length of your cotton should be long enough to fill these exactly.

Comb and trim your cotton to fit into each of the channels. Moulding them into shape is far easier by applying some e-liquid at this stage and using a toothpick (pointed and non-conductive!)

You can also add a little extra cotton (the length of the juice inlet) and pancake the ends if you wish to plug them. Remember to prime the rest of the coil and attach the base to the tank.

Close the airflow control ring, remove the top cap and fill the tank via either one of the two available top fill ports. You may wish to partially fill the tank initially for final checks prior to use.

That, in theory, should be it! Open the airflow control ring, attach it to your device if you have not done so already and enjoy the immense flavour that the Kylin mini has to offer you.

It is advisable to use a device (preferably regulated) that supports Sub Ohm Vaping.

There are a lot of positives with this latest RTA from Vandy Vape, not least the excellent flavour production, thanks to its low profile and 180° honeycomb airflow system.

A choice between two low profile (shorty) resin drip tips helps to increase the flavour, being that much closer to the coil head. And a novel 180 honeycomb designed build deck helps to increase the flavour further still.

Building space on the gold-plated deck is ample and just to reiterate, make sure you use the correct length coil and cotton to get the best results from it avoiding the possibility of dry hits from occurring.

The inclusion of an extended bubble Pyrex glass tank also minimises the overall height of the tank while at the same time increasing the e-liquid volume.

Vandy vape has also included in their spares package two different types of screw to suit your personal preference which is a nice touch.

The only potential negative points I could find on the Kylin Mini were the positioning of the screws, It might be worthwhile changing their position on the deck for future releases plus, the maximum area covered by the air holes. The area should be increased to accommodate larger coil types.

Purley on a personal note, I would love to see a top airflow design on a future RTA release as well. I’m sure the R&D team at Vandy Vape will not have a problem in designing it!

The Vandy Vapes Kylin mini supports direct lung inhale and is not recommended for the Mouth To Lung vaper. You can check out my review of Vandy Vapes Berserker MTL RDA, a review of which is coming up next on Vape On Watt Reviews so stay tuned.

It’s is all about flavour, so you can expect plenty of it believe me!

Expect price tag to be around the £26 $30 mark.
